Craft & Tradition
Basketry has a long tradition in Rwanda, where locally available plant fibers have historically been transformed into both practical and decorative objects. Coiled baskets are traditionally created by wrapping and stitching plant fibers around an inner core, producing the distinctive texture and pattern of the finished piece.
Historically, baskets played an important role in everyday life, used for gathering and carrying crops, winnowing and sifting, and transporting goods to market. Today, these time-honored techniques continue while basketry has also evolved into an expressive decorative art form.
Because each basket is individually woven by hand, subtle variations in color, weave, shape, and dimensions are expected. These characteristics are part of the beauty and individuality of an artisan-made object rather than imperfections.
