Dating to the late 1980s–early 1990s, this vintage enamel pin features KENNEBUNKPORT MAINE surrounding a patriotic American eagle and stars in classic navy, ivory, red and gold tone.
During George H. W. Bush’s presidency, nearby Walker’s Point—the Bush family’s beloved summer home—became internationally known as the “Summer White House.” Presidents, world leaders, dignitaries and members of the press came to Kennebunkport, forever connecting this quintessential Maine town with a remarkable chapter of American presidential history.
This pin is a wonderful little memento of that era.
What makes this find especially remarkable is how it was discovered.
More than three decades after these pins were produced, we came across a very small cache right here in Maine, still unworn and preserved in their original packaging. Known in the vintage world as new old stock—or “deadstock”—these pieces had quietly survived together for decades before being discovered.
We were fortunate to acquire the collection, and only a very limited number are available. Once this small group is gone, we cannot guarantee that we will ever be able to source them again.
Whatever one’s politics, the Bush years remain an important part of Kennebunkport’s history. For those who remember that era—or simply love the history of this extraordinary little coastal town—this pin is pure nostalgia.
Originally intended as a lapel pin, we especially love wearing ours today on a favorite canvas beach or boat tote, mixed among collected vintage Maine, nautical and Americana pins.
