The Kentucky Derby, presented by Woodford Reserve, is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for 3 year old Thoroughbred horses. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Often reffered to as the most exciting two minutes in sports, the race itself is short but the day is an event filled social occasion to see and be seen!
In fact positioning the Derby as a fashion event was originally a tactic to get women to Churchill Downs! Horseraces were a typical event for European Society but American women were hesitant to attend. By touting the races as a social event and opportunity to picnic outdoors with friends, the ladies of Louisville arrived wearing the best morning dress and hats. Hats at the time signified your social status and much to our delite have remained a Derby Day tradition.
Gather together with Friends and Family and combine with your Mother's Day celebrations for a wonderful kickoff to the Outdoor Season!
