FACTS & HISTORY: Celluloid is a brand name. From the late 19th century to the 1940s accessories and collectibles were fashioned from Celluloid. The material was widely popular as a substitute for ivory. The yellow Celluloid accessories with graining often look like ivory. Celluloid was the first synthetic plastic material, developed in the 1860sfrom a homogeneous colloidal dispersion of nitrocellulose and camphor. If you want to test a piece you suspect to be celluloid, put it under hot running tap water. Celluloid omits the scent of camphor when heated in this way
