Once known for it's long stretches of beach and an interior of farmland, towns and villages with 18th-century shingle buildings and estates hidden behind tall boxwood hedges, it has become a string of seaside communities known as a summer destination for affluent New York City residents.  A place for the elite and celebrities to summer on the East Coast. An adult playground, with splashy restaurants and nightclubs and designer boutiques. Old money oozes throughout Southampton, while new wealth reigns in East Hampton. Montauk once a hit with fishermen and surfers is a new hotspot. The Long Island Railroad travels the Hamptons in just an hour.
